Nervous. It is a word most people most identify with when they hear they have to have an ostomy. Most patients do not even know what an ostomy is before hearing they have to get one. If they had heard of it before, then it usually is not positive things. There are many negative connotations surrounding ostomies. But, there are quite a few myths, too. Here is the truth. People will be able to tell I have an ostomy Absolutely not. Unless you usually walk around with belly shirts, then sure, some people will notice. But if you plan on wearing normal, business casual or sporty clothes then I think you are in the clear. Athletes even wear their form-fitting suits without anyone noticing. People do not have to know you have an ostomy if you do not want them to know. My ostomy will smell Using ConvaTec ostomy supplies ensures people will not be able to smell you. The only way people will be able to smell is if there is a leak, which happens very irregularly. If you use your ConvaTec ostomy supplies correctly, then leaks should be the least thing on your mind. If for some reason you do fear you are starting to smell you can excuse yourself to the bathroom to check your bag. The worst people will think is maybe you let out a fart. And who doesn’t do that every now and again? I can no longer participate in sports Like I said before, many professional athletes have an ostomy and are still performing at their highest level of skill. But even amateur athletes have nothing to worry about. Just test your limits in your first fews weeks of having your ostomy, and I think you will be surprised with how much you can do. I cannot swim anymore
The strength of your ostomy should be carefully tested, but it should be fine. You will definitely be fine if you are just enjoying a nice time at the beach or pool. Most people do not worry about swimming because they are afraid of their ostomy being wet, but because they are embarrassed by the look of it. First, you should not be embarrassed. But, if you are, I understand. Try wearing a looser fitting one piece suit if you are a lady, or trying wearing a swim shirt if you are a man.
